Trenton D. Watrous, CPA, CFE, CVA

Trent leads the Dental Services Practice at WSW CPAs.  His  experiences as a tax preparer, auditor, expert witness, forensic accountant and trusted advisor prepared him for the challenges of today’s business climate. Trent serves dental clients in roles which range from oversight of transitions to new entity startups to growth management within dental practices. He also assists clients with determining incentive plans, changing compensation methods, obtaining loans or purchasing equipment.

Trent particularly enjoys working with clients who have complex challenges.  He views today’s dental economic environment as one filled with opportunity for the practice owner.  Although complexity often accompanies opportunity, Trent’s style of coaching and communication brings simplicity to the delivery of solutions.  He holds a deep conviction that educating clients on business principles is critical to their long-term success.  In that perspective, he is called the “purveyor of business acumen."

Trent is a sought-after, highly rated speaker for dental audiences.  He speaks on tax planning, understanding financial statements, investing in equipment, dental metrics, and changes in the dental industry.  Humorously, he has taught dentists to how to steal, for the purpose of understanding how they may become a victim of fraud.  In his career, Trent has been an instructor to FBI agents on financial statement fraud, tax matters, and money laundering.

With nearly 25 years of public accounting experience, Trent has also served in the roles of crisis negotiator, court-appointed arbitrator, and expert witness in both state and federal courts.  Truly difficult environments are his comfort zone.  A curriculum vitae is available upon request.

Trent earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Freed Hardeman University.  He is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in Tennessee..  Trent is also a Certified Valuation Analyst and Certified Fraud Examiner.  Beginning his career with KPMG in Richmond, Virginia, Trent has also served in the role of chief financial officer of a closely-held entity.

In his personal time, Trent enjoys cooking with his wife, beekeeping, or “cruising” in his vintage 1948 Willys Jeep.

NOTE: Trent holds extensive experience in forensic analysis of data related to fraud and economic damages.  He has testified in federal and state courts on both civil and criminal matters.  Trent has led investigations and analysis of fraud cases ranging from a few hundred dollar employee embezzlement to a $180,000,000 Ponzi scheme.

The WSW core value that stands out most to me is We Put Other People First. One aspect of that is always being honest. We love to celebrate with our clients when they have successes, but sometimes an individual or business situation requires a difficult conversation. We won’t shy away from delivering the message that you need to hear, even when it’s hard.
